In his recent work, Clive Thompson suggests that the new generation writing is improving in new directions. Because the waves of new technology like, cell phones, and the internet, the new generation is actually writing far more then any previous generation. Clive Thompson is responding to Professor John Sutherland of University College of London who says that technology has dehydrated our language. Thompson calls upon Andrea Lunsford to support his argument. Lunsford found that of the entire writing Stanford Students write, 38% of it took place outside the class room and it’s because writing has become a very social thing to do. It’s from this social aspect that Thompson concludes that the students of today are almost always writing for an audience. Thompson explains that for students writing is about persuading, organizing, and debating, even if the piece of writing is just a critique of a movie. My own view is that the abundance of resources to communicate through writing is revolutionary. Though I concede that writing may be becoming less formal and more of just quick blips of information, I still maintain that it is for the better and not a problem, and in fact with all the information available it needs to be condensed for who ever you are writing to (for example writing this very paragraph is further condensed info from Thompsons article). Now days when you write you do always write for an audience. This audience could be friends on facebook or to people you don’t know responding to any issue in our community. Having this skill is essential in every person’s life. As shown Thompsons essay students today would much prefer writing about something that had a large audience. Something that people besides the teacher would want to read. The purpose of any other kind of writing would purely be written for a good grade. For example writing about a given topic that had some impact on the world would have a larger audience then say a book report on a fictional novel. Although some might object that I reply that these methods teaching are needed. I reply that a lot of writing winds up to just being busy work. Outside of practicing writing itself it does not directly relate to our lives.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said at the end, being able to discuss real life situations and socialize through writing will arguabley be more relvant in our future then being able to write 5 page essays.
