"Growing Up Online" is a PBS documentary about how the Internet is changing society from pre- and young adolescence through high school. Funded through the "Frontline" program, which is produced by PBS and the film directed by Rachel Dretzin and John Maggio. A key aspect of this film is it's interview angle and some brief clips of scenes being discussed second-hand. The film focuses on the disturbing - cyber bullying, in the case of young Ryan Halligan, down the range to inoffensive (Greg, a young man trying to join the military).
The Internet has affected me in a balanced way both productively and unproductively. It connects me with a lot of people who share my hobbies, and conversely it's filled with a many web pages that, frankly, are garbage. These sites often promote "comedy" without any further meaning, comedy a way to connect thoughts simply, but these comedy sites often go straight for the one-liners and punchlines without actually adding anything to the discussion. I find that sometimes being funny is sometimes a merit in it's own right, and so I visit the comedy sites occasionally anyway (usually coming away disappointed). Tolerating them is not difficult, but it sometimes can be impossible to see how anyone could be interested in wasting their time on them.
