Growing up Online Summary

Part 1: This PBS documentary "Growing Up Online" was portraying the growing popularity of online communication, socializing and media that has grown over the last decade. It gave negative opinions for worrisome parents and it also gave opinions from adults that were in favor of this growing trend. Danah Boyd, a Harvard professor is quoted saying, "[The internet is] socialization, it's learning about life." I absolutely agree with her point of view in this argument. Kids continue their lives on the computer and in a sense, benefit from always having that interaction with other people. Teenagers feel a sense of freedom from their parents when they are on the internet, and I think that is needed when growing up in a household controlled by the parental figures.

Part 2: The internet has definitely impacted my life in a good way by helping me keep in touch with friends, finding out new information, and it has helped many times with research for school projects. The internet brings convenience together with functionality to help with pretty much any question I have. Facebook keeps me up to date with how my friends are and what they're doing. Websites like Livejournal and Twitter I use to follow my favorite bands and see their updates when they post them. Lastly, I used email to receive news from my job and to contact teachers and friends as well.
