It is in some fact at some level, a romantic re-creation of the American story…”(301-302). Self proves this claim by stating later in the essay that Americans history is full or minority groups that are less fortunate. Self looks into multiple advertisements and shows who the minority groups are in this land of opportunity for some.

“Our cultural experience, indeed, tells us something very different-that America is land of free for some”(304). Self goes on to talk about all of the segregation and racism that America has had through out history. Self concludes this to say that “opportunity is a commodity generally limited privilege groups within this country”(304).
