Dove Commercial- True Colors

When I watched this Dove commercial, a lot was going through my mind. I was trying to think about what things the Dove producers were trying to get across in this commercial. To me, it was focused on girls who have self esteem problems and isn’t confident in how they look. Every girl has something about them that they do not like or wish they could change forever. One girl stated that she did not like her freckles, another girl states when she is with this boy that she is ugly. Another very young girl who is oriental wishes she was blond, then a teenager thinks she is fat when clearly she is not. Dove is trying to get a huge point across saying to every woman in America should be happy with the way they look. Every girl has different looks, flaws, and things they may not be happy with but we should be happy with what we look like and who we are. We all have opinions on how we see others; we just shouldn’t worry about the comments that are said about us. Feeling confident is even more beautiful in a woman, if woman feel beautiful in her own skin, they will begin to love who they are.

A lot of media makes young girls like in the commercial feel ugly, not good enough, and hate certain things about themselves. No woman is perfect in her looks because no one can define perfect. Yeah, our society has a ‘perfect’ image of how girls should look, but in reality, not everyone can look like that. I feel we were made to look and be different, that’s what makes life interesting. Dove is trying to get across that we need to feel beautiful and confident in our own skin and accept who we are. Every girl and woman has put her self down at least one in her lifetime; I know I have. I feel like the myth that Dove is trying to point out and recognize is to show girls that we aren’t the only ones who feel ashamed of how we look. Maybe it’s because we should feel wonderful and beautiful and learn to love ourselves. A lot of different cultures are shown in this commercial as well, which shows a lot. The idea of focusing on younger women was a good idea because it creates a scene that shows how insecure girls are nowadays.

  1. I really like the add that you choose to use, it makes alot of sense to me and you did a great job in analyzing why this commercial is so powerfull to some people especially women and girls growing up in this world of perfection and standards.
