Wesch response

In his recent work, Michael Wesch suggests that technology is changing the way things are done these days. He believes that technology can save our educations. Through this video you can see that all of the students in the classroom were able to successfully use writing to clearly communicate a thought of theirs in one short sentence to get a point across. Students don’t feel that most of their school work is relevant to their lives. They aren’t studying in or out of class. They spend their time not doing their work, but instead on things like facebook and surfing the web. Why listen in class when you can get any answer to anything with the click of a button? It is a waste of money both for the classes and for the books. Students spend a lot of money on books and may never even open it up. Some students are starting to feel like they shouldn’t be paying such an enormous amount of money for an education that they aren’t really getting because they are able to learn the same stuff through internet. Students today are expert multi-taskers, and a major contributing factor as to why this is, is technology. Students are always texting, on facebook, talking to someone, and maybe even doing some work all at the same time. A quote that Wesch added into this video, by a man named Josiah F. Bumstead, “The inventor of the system deserves to be ranked among the best contributors to learning and science, if not the greatest benefactors of mankind.” This here shows the revolution that we’re experiencing today. Technology is the new way of life.
My view on this topic is that technology is a major distraction to students in today’s society. Just like we saw in this video, people spend more time listening to music, texting, and staying connected with their friends on the internet with things like facebook and twitter, than they do with anything else. It keeps people from doing things that they should be doing. If technology isn’t taken advantage of, it can contribute to greatness in education. People need to learn to balance out school work and all of their socializing. I do agree with the quote by Bumstead, a large majority of the learning that is done today comes from technology, rather than in-class learning.
