Wii Commercial

During the holidays, a new Wii commercial was aired. In this 30 second clip, it showed a father of the family buying a Nintendo Wii for his family during the holiday season. Right off the bat, he starts talking about how the family was all together and that he bought them a Nintendo Wii system. It then goes to show a woman playing the Wii with the family all around laughing. The father then says “The family that plays together stays together.” This is insisting that if a family owns a Wii, they will be happy. With everyone scrambling and shouting on the couch, everyone is having a fantastic time together. This shows that by buying the Nintendo Wii, it will bring your family together. The father then goes on saying “The family adores me,” with a gentle shrug and smile. By saying this, it insists that if a person is to get a Wii; the person who buys it will be loved by the family the person got it for. The last bit of the commercial then goes on with, what appears to be, the fathers’ father making fun of his son by telling him that he is a disappointment because he made a mistake while playing a game. The commercial then ends with a bit of comic relief of the fathe saying “It’s going to be a great Christmas.”
To understand a commercial like this, it is best to understand what the Wii system even is. Without the common knowledge of what this system can do this commercial can or will be difficult to follow. The Nintendo Wii is capable of many things including: motion control, internet capabilities, and of course the ability to play games. Overall, what this commercial is promoting is that by going out and buying a Nintendo Wii, you and your family will come together and stay together. It shows this when the father says it, and when the family is all having fun together playing the “New Super Mario Bros. Wii.” In the last second of the commercial, it shows that they knocked down the price for the holiday season and proves to be the perfect gift. Although that may be true, it probably isn’t the case for everyone. The overall myth of this is that by owning a Nintendo Wii, you and your family will automatically become happy together.
