In his recent work, Michael Wesch suggests "Some say technology alone can save us...". This is the ending quote of Wesch's video "A vision of Students". This is not just a video, but a youtube video, which is a very popular website amongst today's youth. This ties in well with the message of the video. Times are changing into a more technology based society outside the classroom, however, the learning institution hasn't yet caught up. Through out the video are confessions of students who admitt to spending more time on the computer and on their cell phones then reading their expensive text books. Even during a lexture the video shows students on their laptops rather than taking in the lecture because it isn't relevant to their lives. Which is why through this silent video Wesch opens up the discussion: Can technology save us? Or will it destroy us?
My own view is that Wesch brings up an excellent point and this is somthing that needs to be taken seriously. As for the students in the video, I won't deny that I am a victim of spending a fair amount of time online as well as on my cell phone. However, I am one of those working college students in the video, but I don' t have internet access in my appartment. For me, every chance I do get online it's very crucial that I use it working on school work. I then would agree with Wesch and point out that technology can help us advance to more convenient teaching methods for students but it's not going to work if we take technology for granted.
