New Flavor Pitch - Doritos

Doritos aired an ad for the Super Bowl in 2009, it was given the title New Flavor Pitch. The Super Bowl has been part of American culture that has long involved Doritos and beer. Therefore, it only makes sense to use beer as the new chip flavor for this Super Bowl ad. The commercial starts out with a well dressed man giving a pitch to his clients about the beer flavored Doritos. The clients are quick to judge that a beer flavored chip is not a good idea. The expressions on the clients’ faces immediately tell the viewers of this ad that they don’t like the idea. But as the clients sit in silence he continues his pitch saying that one bag of Doritos is equivalent to a 16 oz. of beer. He is devouring a bag as he is sharing the idea to his clients.. Once he finishes his pitch he asks his clients what they thought. One of them tells him that it’s a horrible idea. And the seen quickly goes back to the man pitching, who’s now dressed in nothing but a tie and underwear. The sight of him is ridiculously hilarious, he is nothing but a mess. Visibly intoxicated he shouts to his clients, “You don’t know me!” Then the scene cuts to a bag of Doritos. “Doritos. Leave the flavours to us.” is the theme this ad was going for. Maybe they didn’t like some of the new flavor ideas being suggested to them. The Doritos logo appears, under it reads “Eat Responsibly.” This is a definite pun on the alcohol ads that try to promote safe drinking by saying “Drink Responsibly.” Then there is another short clip showing the intoxicated man passed out on one of his clients. Now anyone who’s been around people who have been intoxicated with alcohol can relate. So we have a connection now between the ad and viewers. And the whole composition of this ad and how everything played out just makes you let out a laugh. It’s good enough to watch a few times too. I have to say this ad was one of the best I have seen in a while. Hopefully the Super Bowl this year, 2010, will promise some mind-blowing ads like in previous years. So when you do sit down to watch the Super Bowl this year, you won’t have to buy a keg. That is, of course, that you have some beer flavoured Doritos around to substitute.

  1. Assumtions that are made in this add are that the majority of superbowl fans like to drink beer and eat doritoes. Its very much part of our culture to drink and eat these during a game, becuase its part of the social aspect of not watching the game alone. -megan

  2. The assumptions of the ad are that getting drunk on beer chips is ok when presenting an idea to an office of business men. It tells the consumer that the flavors of Doritos is nothing to mess with. They say "leave the flavors to us" which kind of tells the consumer that the flavors are way to advanced for them to ever try and make.
