Clive Thompson is introducing in this text his view as well as Mrs Lunsford’s study about the effect that technology has on our way of writing.
On one hand, Clive Thompson claims that because of the new technology like Facebook, Power Point, kids don't write essays anymore. It therefore means that they are unable to write.
On the other hand, Mrs Lunsford argues that technology is not preventing us to write well but in contrary it's reviving our way of writing. Through a study she made, she noticed that today's teenagers write more than before. They know who their audience is and therefore argue more openly adapting themselves to these new technologies. She tries to say that because students know who they are addressing their writing to, are more enthusiastic. They believe that their writing has an important purpose in life as they try to persuade or debate with a known audience.
So we are coming now to this important question: does technology affect literacy positively or negatively ?
I believe that our way of writing has changed a lot. We write shorter sentences and don't take as much time to elaborate huge texts analyzing what they say or mean. We live in a fast-paced environment where everything has to be rapidly done in an accurate way. Since the technology has highly improved during this last century, we have to adapt ourselves to this new way of communicating, thinking and writing. With the Internet, the information is endless and any topics can be found. As Mrs Lunsford mentioned, we know who we are talking to since we choose what information interests us on the Internet. We are free to post a comment, an idea or anything we want to say without being judged, since everyone untertakes the same action. Yes the "famous" 3 pages essay is banished from our nowadays way of writing. Why spending 3 hours thinking of how we are going to write an essay about a topic we don't even understand dated from the last century. If we have the possibility to express ourselves on different topics that are more actual, we should do so.
We need to live with our time and accept that technology is here and just use it. Actually technology saves us time, energy and it allows us to connect with people from all over the World. For me, Internet is the most amazing tool that could be invented on earth.
Sometimes, I have the feeling that on some topics I studied ten years ago, I learn more through the Internet today.
In conclusion, I agree with Clive Thompson on the fact that essays have been replaced by the new technology, however that doesn’t mean that because we write different texts we don’t know how to write correctly.
