Wesch Homework
As I watched the short clip by Michael Wesch, I felt I could really relate to the students. In the video there was a full classroom of students probably around 100 I'm guessingsitting there some with lap tops out some without. Just expressing thoughts they go through when sitting in the class, and what they spend their time doing everyday. This really hit home for me. My first quarter out of high school, I attended Western Washington University, and was sitting in a classroom just like they were, feeling the same way. I brought my lap top to come classes aI found not that interesting and went on Facebook, and honeslty if I didnt get service in class to text I probably would not have made it through them. I was in three classes with at least 100 students in each one, and was very overwelmed. Going from a small 3A school with max 30 kids in a class to 100 was too much. After that quarter was over I moved back home and thats when I came to Whatcom. I am now behind because fall quarter at Western, I didnt learn anything. I was paying too much for an education I wasn't recieving. These students talked about how they go on facebook during class, text during class, and even dont go at all. They talked about how studying time, working, going to class, and having a life was a problem becuase there wasn't enough time in the day to do all those things. Although Wesch does not say so directly, he apperantly assumes that this is not how education should go. Students should be able to communicate and get help from teachers directly if they are not getting the work, not just be expected to understand everything. Students should be able to have a life outside of just going to class and studying. Most important, I think, is students and teachers should meet somewhere in the middle with all this new technology that is forming. Teachers think students should just sit in class and take notes and read books that most likely dont really interest everyone, and things should just go as planned. These days there are too many new things that are forming and not to totally blame that teachers but the schools in general, I think, need to get with the times, and get caught up on the new technology. Make learning and coming to class enjoyable in some way. Even if its a power point or a youtube video, just makes education a little more upbeat for the new generation. I hope that Wesch gets some recignition for his work, this is a really eye opening video that I think a lot more educators need to see. Thhis may come off as I just want education to become all about facebook and texting but in a way I wasnt something along those lines. Maybe we get notes offline or maybe even get to watch a video that is new, not black and white, and dated way back when. Whatcom has those things to me, we get to communicate with the teachers and they understand that we have lives outside of school. Times are changing and Wesch has really pin pointed out real issues.
