Nathaniel Averna

Growing up on Orcas Island I too, like many of you, have the privilege of being a resident of Washington State. On the Island, I grew up with my twin sister who is also enrolled at Whatcom Community College. With know malls, bowling allies, or traffic lights, life on the island was always interesting and creative. Hence the term "Coastco Run," meaning an all day affair that usually involved Burlington or some other big city where us children would possibly taste the happiness found in a happy meal. In high school I played soccer and was also on the sailing team. After high school I attended Bellingham Technical College for a few years and then went to sea aboard a cupple tall ships (big sail boats). For almost the last two years I have been sailing around, furthering my diesel skills and traveling at the same time. I sailed up the West coast of North America and around the Atlantic Ocean. Both trips exposed me to interesting people and places. From storms on the west coast in the middle of winter, to beautiful Caribbean days, I learned a lot about myself and the world we live in. That is not to say I know everything for I have only just scratched the surface. I would like to continue sailing and traveling but before I do I would also like to gain a high education of sorts; hence, English 100. Which brings me to part two.
For me, writing is a way to express my view and ideas to other people. Weather it is a post-card from some far off port or just a short e-mail, writing keeps me connected with friend and family. I find that making a journal entry while traveling or e-mailing a friend is my most common use of writing. But I also realize that I have a lot to work on. Currently I feel like I use incorrect grammar and spelling. Not to mention I sometimes write to fast and jumble up the point I am making, which causes my letter/journal entry to be incoherent. I am hoping this class to will help me become a more confident writer and teach me new styles and techniques, to help articulate my ideas and thoughts.
